The movie industry has fallen, but can it get up?

Why aren't we going to the movies?

The movie industry in 2005 has been the lowest in attendance and ticket sales it has in years. There have been many factors that people have said that draw them away from theaters.

Here are some of those factors:
  • The theater environment( talking, cell phones, rude people, and lengthy pre-show commercials)
  • The quality of the movies
  • Price of tickets and food/drink
  • Higher quality of home entertainment
  • Movies are coming to DVD faster

The competiton...

Movies have to compete with the new home entertainment market place. A widescreen plasma TV with a 7.1 Dobly Digital Surround Sound Stereo system is much easier to come by nowadays. And with DVD's coming out within a couple months of the intital release, watching the movie in the comforts of your own home is that much more hassel-free.

Will 2006 have a better story to tell?

2005 was not a total loss. There were some blockbuster hits like "Batman Begins" and "Star Wars: Episode III" but that just was not enough. The end of the year was the most promising which could be a taste of what is to come.

There are many anticipate movies in 2006 such as "X-Men 3", "Mission: Impossible 3", and "The Da Vinci Code". But big budgets and big names does not necessarily mean big box office. The story is much more important than the $100 million dollar movie with state-of-the-art computer graphics and A-list celebrities. So maybe if Hollywood can produce better movies, the theaters better service, then the movie industry may be on the rise soon enough.
